Problems Found When Inspecting Windows – Part 1

Have you started on your exterior home cleanup yet?  Checking your windows should be on your to-do list, especially after the long winter we had.  There are things you can inspect yourself, but better yet, schedule an inspection by a professional MN window contractor.

There are numerous problems that can be found during a window inspection. Being able to be on top of these issues, and knowing what to check for during the inspection can give you a better idea to know whether or not your windows are going to pass.

Check Your Windows’ Exterior

The inspection always starts on the outside of the home. The flashing, windows, screens and trim of the windows should be checked thoroughly. Look for any cracks or damage done to the outside of the window first and foremost. If you’ve got a sprinkler system, does it face towards the home and hit the windows?  This can cause water problems inside if there are any issues with your windows.

Interior Window Inspection

The interior portions of the windows are also carefully looked over.  The frame, glass and screens should be checked for any damage. One of the biggest inspections that is done on the interior is for moisture build-up. This is something that indicates that water is getting inside.

Top Issues Found During Window Inspections

  • Damaged Exterior Trim – This is a big problem. Damaged trim can result in water trapped inside, causing moisture to build up and cause further issues. In addition to this, it can cause mold and mildew to grow in the areas around the window.
  • Cracked Panes – This allows outside air to come into the home (or leak outside), and this also means higher energy bills.  If the glass is cracked this is not only a problem, it can be dangerous and the window can fall apart.
  • Lack of Flashing – Flashing is generally placed above the window when siding is placed on the home. When this is not done, not done correctly or is damaged, then it could be letting water into the home in the spaces around the window.

A window inspection is the first place to start when evaluating the condition of your windows.  Here are some other signs that show you may need replacement windows and doors in your home.
