The Truth About Vinyl Windows vs. Wood Windows

When the time comes to purchase new windows, choosing the frame construction material is an important decision. The two most popular options today are wood and vinyl. Of these two, vinyl windows are leading the market as the choice for installation. This is not to say that vinyl should be the automatic choice. There are preferences for both, depending on what’s important to you in a replacement window.

Wood frame windows carry the traditional charm that no other can match. Wood can be finished in ways that let the natural beauty shine through.  Man-made materials such as vinyl can only attempt to simulate real world beauty. And if you want versatility in finish color and type, nothing can match real wood.  If painting the frames is the choice going forward, the color options with wood windows are infinite. You’re only limited by paint and stain colors available.

Both wood and vinyl have similar insulating properties, so the choice depends on ambiance, maintenance, durability, and cost.

In most of these categories, vinyl is the clear option. Vinyl does not hold the distinct beauty of wood, but beyond that, it is the clear leader. Today’s vinyl windows come in a larger array of colors and simulated wood grains than ever before. Because they can’t be painted or further finished, though, the initial choice is also the only lifetime option. Wood can be refinished or painted different colors, but it will also have to be refinished from time to time. Cleaning the vinyl is an easier chore than a finished wood. These windows stand up to the elements far better. They will not peel, rot, or flake as wood can. The resistance to insect infestation is another advantage. No moisture will penetrate the surface, so warping is not a concern. The final win for vinyl is cost. Wood windows average 10-25% t more to purchase, and then you have to add in maintenance costs.  Vinyl upkeep is virtually free.
