What Are Signs That the Siding on My MN Home Needs to be Replaced?

With the severe weather we’ve been having in the Minneapolis area lately, some homeowners are calling their siding contractor for emergency repairs.  Of course, you can’t control the weather and the damaging effects it can have on your home, but usually there are indications that your siding may not hold up much longer.

There are many signs that can tell you when the siding on your home needs to be replaced. Not only can they indicate your siding has deteriorated, but they also can signal something bad is happening underneath the siding and that there are problems below what you can see on the surface. When these problems arise, you should have the siding either repaired or replaced by a quality company before any more damages can occur. Protect the outside of your home so that the inside stays protected, as well.

Signs Indicating You Need New Siding

  • Your siding is warped, peeling away from the home or rotting.   These are big indicators that perhaps it is time for some new siding. Consider the age of the siding as well as the type. Would it be wise to repair the damaged section or replace siding on the entire home? This is an important decision – siding that’s in this shape can let weather elements such as wind and moisture into the home.
  • Does it require you to paint it often so that it looks good?   If you have to go through and paint and repair it year after year, it might be time to replace it entirely.
  • HVAC expenses are through the roof.  When you’re paying more than you would like in energy costs (or more than what you would think), it might be time to re-side the outside of your home.  Poorly insulated, poor quality siding as well as warped or loose siding can all cause air leaks.  Replacing your siding with more energy-efficient siding can save you some money when it comes to your energy costs.
  • Growth of fungus or mold on the outside of the home.  If you notice fungus growing on the outside of your home, then you will want to make sure that you clean it off when you first see it. But you should be aware that what you see on the surface could be just part of the problem.  If you’ve got loose spots or gaps, that growth is probably underneath the siding as well.  Mold and fungus can then migrate inside your home and could make your entire family sick.  If you’ve got wood siding that’s mold-infested, the best answer could be to just replace it.
  • Bubbles in the siding. Bubbles are areas where the siding is lifting away from the house rather than sitting tight against it.  Bubbles mean that air (and probably moisture, too) is getting underneath your siding.  This can make way to letting the water and outside air into your home.

When it’s time to replace your siding, Window Outfitters can provide high quality siding options. We install fiber cement siding from James Hardie, Craneboard insulated vinyl siding, and Marvin Apex Ultrex fiberglass siding.  These are top-quality siding products that are able to provide a protective over layer for the outside of your home.
