Why Fiber Cement Siding Is A Better Choice for MN Homes Than Wood

Does the siding on your home need a revamp?

Many older homes around the Minneapolis area still have wood clapboard or lap siding.  If that’s your home, maybe you should consider replacing the outdated wood with fiber cement siding from The James Hardie Company.

James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding Is Right for Any Minnesota Home

This siding is perfect for just about any home in our area, new or old.

Even houses that are in historical districts have the okay to replace wood siding with fiber cement siding because the look is so authentic.  You can hardly tell that it is not genuine wood when looking at it, even up close.

Although it is a little bit less than wood, at $3 to $4 per square foot compared to $5 to $7 per square foot for wood, it is a more expensive-up front choice than most vinyl or aluminum siding.  However, the durability and fire resistance of fiber cement siding make it a great investment in the long run.

Fiber cement siding is extremely durable and virtually indestructible. It is composed of sand, cement, and cellulose fibers. which give it its amazing sustainability. Best of all, there’s no painting or treating needed. It arrives in the color that you want. (You can paint it later on if you want to change the color, though, instead of replacing the whole house’s siding when you’d like a different color on your home.)

James Hardie fiber cement siding also resists pests, rot, and fire – unlike traditional wood siding. It requires less upkeep than wood siding would, too. It does not need to be treated or stained before putting it on the side of your home. In our harsh climate, it is recommended that you stain and paint your wood siding every three to five years; fiber cement siding does not need that kind of maintenance. There is one drawback to that, however; if you were going for a more “weathered” look, like a beach house would look, fiber cement siding will never end up looking that way no matter how long it sat on the beach near salt water.

Although some woods resist pests and insects either naturally or with treatment, there is still unavoidable vulnerability. Wood siding doesn’t stand up to heavy wind-driven rains, high winds, and hail like fiber cement siding will.

Other factors come into play when it comes to choosing fiber cement siding, too. If you have always had wood and that is just what you are used to, sticking with wood might be a good idea.  But we’d like to encourage you to take a look at James Hardie fiber cement siding – you may change your mind when you see you can get the look of real wood without all the drawbacks.
