How to Choose the Right Colors for Your New James Hardie Siding

If you’re among the thousands of homeowners here in the Twin Cities metro who have made the decision to upgrade their homes by having fiber cement siding from The James Hardie Company® installed, we congratulate you!  We believe this is the very best siding material for Minnesota homes, for a number of reasons.

But now that you’ve already settled on Hardie® siding, your next decision should be the color.

James Hardie siding comes in many color variations to choose from. The color of the siding that you select matters just as much as the type and style of siding that you choose to go with. This is something worth thinking about.

You want to ensure that you’re working with the right colors that are not only going to make your home stand out in your neighborhood but are also colors that you like.

Some neighborhoods or homeowners associations (HOAs) only allow specific colors, so keep this in mind if you live in one of these areas.  But with so many different colors to choose from, we’re sure that you have color choices that will be approved.

Guidelines for Choosing Your Exterior Siding Color

  • Consider the color of the roof
  • Consider the location of your home (the neighboring homes as well as the environment)
  • Keep your climate conditions in mind, especially whether you’ve got a shady or sunny lot
  • Test the color that you are thinking about
  • Choose a color that fits with the architectural style of your home
  • Look at current exterior home color trends

You Can Choose at Least Three Colors

When you select a color scheme for your home’s exterior, we suggest you choose at least three different colors for the main areas. The home shown in the photo above is a great example of a three-shade color scheme.  (Some homes have only two colors – siding and trim. But you can easily add a third color by painting your front door an accent color, or by adding shutters in a different color.)

  • Body (the majority of your siding)
  • Accent (one area, such as highlighting the entry or gables)
  • Trim (includes soffit and fascia boards, trim framing windows and doors, corner trim, columns, etc.)

When it comes to choosing colors, select the main color first. This is the most dominant visual, so the other colors will work off this one.  Once this color is chosen, you can then match or contrast the two other colors with this main color. Usually, white is a great trim color that goes well with just about any hue. Notice how the white trim on this home draws your eye to various elements like the windows and porch posts?

But there are other colors that can work well for trim. Right now we’re seeing darker trim accents, especially black.

And you don’t have to stick with just three colors.  Certain styles of homes such as Victorians or other period styles may have as many as five or more colors. But you don’t want to overwhelm the eye; multiple colors work best on very large homes that have distinctive architectural elements.

Choose the Right Color Finish

When you order James Hardie siding, you have two different finish options. The first is pre-primed siding that can be painted on site to any color you want, using any paint brand you want. But we highly suggest their exclusive ColorPlus Technology® finish. This multi-layer, durable color coating is one of the best siding finishes available. Additionally, the baked-on bond can provide a stronger color that won’t fade, chip or break. ColorPlus Technology® is also UV ray resistant, making it last for years to come.  It is warrantied to maintain its color far longer than at least two typical paint jobs.

When it’s time for new siding on your home, we suggest you work with a licensed siding professional who has been trained in Hardie siding installation.  We are a Hardie preferred siding installation contractor, which is your assurance that your siding will be installed to their specifications, using their recommended methods.
