Twin Cities Homeowners Shouldn’t Ever Wait to Replace Siding: Here’s Why

There are some home improvement and maintenance items that can be postponed.  Siding replacement isn’t one of them.  Replacing the siding on your home when it needs it is important – not only for the way the home looks, but also for the way it performs and protects the people and items inside it. As a homeowner, you want to make sure that you stay on top of everything that needs to be done around the home, including the siding.

Sometimes it’s really obvious, like the melted vinyl siding shown in this photo here. But there are other indications that might not be so easy to detect. Make sure you know the signs that come with needing your siding replaced, because it is best to be safe, instead of sorry.

Signs That It’s Time for Siding Replacement

You Have High Energy Bills

When your heating and cooling bills are higher than they have been in the past, this could be a sign that means you need to replace the siding, roofing, windows, or other exterior elements of your home that aren’t performing as well as they should be.  Siding provides the most coverage of your home in terms of area, so it’s often a spot we look to when those utility bills go up.

The Siding Is Warped

If the siding on the home is visibly warped or rippled (like the photo above), then it may be time to move on to a different siding.  Siding that isn’t laying flat has been damaged, so replacing it can ensure that your home is kept comfortable and protected. Warped or buckled siding will let in both air and moisture, which can cause problems with your home’s structure as well as wasting energy.

Siding Has Reached Its Age Limit

You should know when your siding was put on the home.  You may have gotten a siding warranty when you purchased the home if you weren’t the one who had it installed.  For example, vinyl siding is generally warrantied from 20-40 years, although with our harsh climate we start looking for it to fail around the 20-year mark.  Wood siding has about the same expected life span, but if regular maintenance hasn’t been kept up, it also may fail prematurely. Fiber cement siding is more long-lasting, but it may need paint after about 7-10 years. (But if you’ve installed James Hardie fiber cement siding with ColorPlus™ finish, the expected life of the color is about double that.)

It is always good to make sure to stay on top of the things that need to be done on your home. Whether it is the siding or any other part of the home, having the right updates done can make all the difference.
