Which Type of Siding is the Best Choice for My Home?

Our blog post earlier this week touched on all the types of siding we install here in the Minneapolis area.  Perhaps you’re wondering just which one is right for your home.

It is crucial that you choose the right siding for the home that you own. Not only do you need to protect the outside of the home but the inside as well. Siding is your home’s protector, and as such, you need to make sure the material your siding is made from is top quality.

There are several considerations to take into account when it comes to choosing the right siding to have installed on your home.

Look for These Features In Home Siding

Water Resistance: The siding  you choose should not give water any chance at getting in underneath it. This is especially important in the Minneapolis area.  We often get heavy wind-driven rains and ice storms.  When water gets into gaps or cracks in the winter months, it can cause ice to form and damage the siding as well as your home’s structure underneath. With Minnesota weather, water resistance should be the number one consideration to make.

Energy Efficiency: The siding that is placed on your home should provide energy saving benefits. Purchasing something that is not going to properly insulate the home and keep the air inside as it should, means you’re just throwing away your money on high utility bills. Choose something with a higher energy efficiency rating.

Durability: How durable is the siding that is being placed on the side of your home. Can it withstand high winds? How about hail? What are the winter snow storms going to do to your siding? You need to find out how well it can stand up to these harsh elements and choose which one is going to provide the most protection without failing.

How Does It Look?: Siding should provide you with many benefits that protect the outside and inside of the home, but you also want to ensure that it looks good on the side of the  home, as well. Choosing siding that comes in many different styles and colors gives you options.

The Different Types of Siding

There are many different types of siding that you can choose from – everything from wood to vinyl, aluminum to fiber cement. Choose something that works the best with your tastes, your home and your needs.  And don’t forget, you CAN mix and match materials.  Mixed media exteriors are very popular these days, and it’s a great way to get that custom home look.  We’ve done several projects recently that included multiple types of siding, including panelized stone.
